The Upper Rhinerift with its foothills between Offenburg(GER) and Basel(CH)

The collision of the African and the European tectonic plate formed the Upper Rhinerift. Between the Black Forest and the actual Upper Rhinerift the so call foothills were left over. They build the edge along the fault of the rift.

This is why we can observe and explore following strata series:

• Basement of the Black Forest
• Trias with its new red sandstone and shell limestone
• Jura with its black, brown and white Jura
• Tertiary with the recent accumulation of the quaternary

By request we will explore different kind of geological formation. Besides that we also will get to know the countryside and the locals. At the end of our excursion we will know, why on some sunny hills wine grows or not.
