Volcanoes of the Eifel

Fault zones arose from the collide of the African with the European tectonic plate, this is why magma pressed forward to the earth's crust.

In the volcano area Eifel happened - geological considered - the youngest volcanic eruption in Germany. At that time with the permanent and immense volcanic eruption of the Laacher-Lake-Volcano, most of the parts of Central Europe were controlled for a few days with its enormous ash rains.
In about 1.8miles (3km) depth a magma chamber was accumulated. Therefore in the magma chamber hot melt rocks were locked in, above it lightly volatile gases were concentrated. Thus the density of the melts reduced, the rise of its gases alleviated. When finally the magma contacted the Laacher Lakes´s groundwater, a funnel-formed chimney, under a enormous water vapor explosion, was opened up.
